Haptic Feedback

The resistance felt by the user was modeled to replicate that of a real lathe. Voltage is output by a model that was derived from torque data collected from a real lathe during a drilling procedure, to ensure the realism of the user's learning experience.

XR Simulator​​

Our simulator includes visual and audio feedback in the form of an extended reality model of a Colchester VS 13 lathe, to enhance the user's learning experience. The simulator's handwheel syncs up with the physical device, and the virtual tailstock advances as the real one would. Other visual feedback includes chips flying out of the drill flute as it drills into the material.

Educational Tutorial

The steps taught in our tutorial include the lathe safety protocols, and the setup, center drilling, and drilling procedures. These steps were based off of those taught by lab technicians in Lafayette College's Manufacturing and Design course. The tutorial includes first-person POV footage of a lab technician operating a real lathe as well as text and voice-over instructions.
